For those of us who have lived in or around Harborough for many years, the leisure centre has been a real plus for our town. Swimming lessons, sports clubs and a gym all on our doorstep. Now, the centre has gone through a well-needed facelift, with more improvements on the way.
‘The centre needed to be refurbished in order to improve the service provided to the local community,’ says Matthew Hopkin, Everyone Active’s contract manager. ‘Everyone Active and Harborough District Council wanted to give local people the best possible opportunity to improve their health and wellbeing.’ Over the past few months, the leisure centre has extended the gym with state-of-the-art equipment, refurbished the group cycling studio, Changing Village and poolside – with a new Atlantis inflatable. The Café has been revamped and the outdoor dome has been replaced with a new structure. The bowls hall will also be turned into soft play for six months of the year, including the new Air X inflatable. But that’s not the end of the plan. ‘The new group exercise studio, wellbeing studio, reception and pool changing rooms are due to be completed at the beginning of November,’ says Matthew. ‘We will, of course, update our customers on exact launch dates.’ Matthew is confident the changes will have a positive impact for Harborough. ‘This fantastic refurbishment means the local community now have state-of-the-art exercise facilities on their doorstep,’ he says. ‘There is something for all ages, abilities and interests, which will enable everyone to improve their physical and mental health.’ Customers are already seeing the benefit, with the first stages of the renovations open for locals to enjoy. ‘We’ve had some lovely feedback on the new areas we’ve opened so far – all of which are equally important to us,’ says Matthew. ‘It’s great to see people using the top-of-the-range equipment we have in the gym, but it’s also brilliant to see the kids enjoying our Atlantis inflatable sessions in the pool. Local leisure centres are so important for the health and wellbeing of the communities they serve. We want to ensure we play our part in supporting local people to be active and live healthy and happy lives.’ Cllr Phil Knowles, Leader of Harborough District Council, is also delighted with the results. ‘We are thrilled with the feedback from residents about the new and upgraded leisure facilities,’ he says. ‘The centre is a valued base for local sports clubs, exercise groups and community organisations, in addition to being well used for rehabilitation and prehabilitation sessions. ‘We are pleased that our capital investment into the centre is delivering a welcome extension to the range of facilities, and provides further opportunities to support and improve the mental health and physical wellbeing of residents.’ To find out more about swim sessions, gym membership, classes and clubs, visit: everyoneactive.com/centre/harborough-leisure-centre
