Sophie Holland took a life-long love of styling events, plus a design-led career, and created Studio Lawson. Here, she tells us all about her dream job, and how she can help you make your event stand out.
Event styling sounds like such an interesting and creative job, can you tell us how you began? I have been styling events unknowingly since I was a child. I was always in charge of picking flowers from the garden to create arrangements, or drawing place cards to set the table with. I spent 10 years in the interior design industry and loved it (and still do), but it wasn’t giving me joy anymore. I spent all of my spare time planning events and styling tables for myself, friends and family and then the business just naturally grew and grew through word-of-mouth recommendations. So, I thought it was time to transition into event styling and planning full time – I haven’t looked back. What is it about styling that motivates you? I’ve always loved bringing people together, celebrating life’s moments, big and small. There is instant gratification in seeing clients’ reactions when they see my work on event day – that feeling is just the best. Each brief is as unique as the person or people you are celebrating, which I love and I get to be creative every day! It’s a lot of work but it is absolutely worth it. What do you think is the main benefit you can offer someone who is looking to style their event? Creative continuity. The best way to make any event look beautifully curated and styled is to have the same creative touch across every aspect. That’s what I offer. I do everything from stationery design to table styling, from florals to planning. This allows for the vision to come to life seamlessly and gives my clients peace of mind. What have been your favourite events to work on so far? Weddings are always so fun to work on, the day is filled with so much love and joy. I also love brand or product launch events, there’s lots of excitement for the beginning of a new chapter and that feeling is very infectious. What is the first thing you do when you begin to work with a new client? I arrange a consultation call, which is an informal chat, where we talk about all of the initial ideas for the event. Colour schemes, menus, decorations and flowers. I figure out the ‘must haves’, the ‘maybes’ and the ‘dreams’ for the event, and then I start gathering inspiration. What would be your dream event to style and plan? All events are dream events, but coming from an interior design/architecture background I do love a beautiful building. I would love to design an event in a glass house or any unique space. There’s so much inspiration you can gather from a unique venue.
