If you have never tried Indian street food restaurant, Mowgli’s, chat bombs, it is hard to put into words just how good they are. A mouthful of crunchy, smooth, flavour-infused magic comes pretty close – but to get the full experience, you need to head to Mowgli in Leicester.
Just 30 minutes from Harborough and situated in the famous ‘Lanes’ area of the town, Mowgli is an Indian street food experience enveloped by twinkly fairy lights and, if you are lucky, seated at one of the unique swing tables. Founded in 2014 by former Child Protection Barrister, Nisha Katona, Mowgli serves food that Indians ‘eat at home and on the street’. Cooked fresh each morning and filled with authentic and vibrant flavours of home cooking.
Throughout November and December, Mowgli are offering a £35 Christmas Feasting Menu, including a glass of prosecco, beer or soft drink, dessert, a choice of dishes and, of course, their famous chat bombs to start. MaHa was lucky enough to be invited to try the feasting menu on their launch week and, after the incredible experience of the chat bombs (pro tip, eat them in one bite to avoid embarrassment) we were slightly concerned the rest of the meal may not live up to expectations. Thankfully, we did not need to worry. Our choice of Gunpowder Chicken gave a crispy pop of complex but delicately-balanced flavour, followed by the Office Worker’s tiffin, which, on our occasion, included Agra ginger chicken and Picnic Potato Curry, both of which packed a punch and more than satisfied. The vegetarian ‘Indian School Tiffin’ offered traditional Temple Dahl and the ‘Holy Chow’ spiced chickpeas. A masterclass in delicate flavours with a kick. To finish we opted for the Mango sorbet cone which was a delightfully refreshing way to end the meal, while we also couldn’t resist a portion of Mowgli’s signature Gulab Jamun on the recommendation of the waiting staff. Described as ‘Syrupy brown nutty milk doughballs’, this cherished Indian dessert did not disappoint. Served warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream it very much lived up to its billing and we will definitely be heading back, if only for another serving of this. Mowgli’s mix of flavour and quality of ingredients, along with knowledgeable and friendly staff to help guide you through the menu, makes the dining experience feel very special. Nothing was too much trouble, including a mid-meal second order of the roti breads, and we felt incredibly looked after.
If the feasting menu isn’t quite what you are after, the regular Mowgli menu offers everything from traditional meals to the Mowgli ‘chip butty’ and Himalayan ‘cheese on toast’. The Mowgli Paneer is a ‘staff favourite’ according to the menu, and it is also a MaHa family favourite – multiple portions are advised in case you end up being forced to share. If you are planning a meal out this festive season, and fancy a truly special dining experience, we can’t recommend Mowgli enough. To secure your table, contact Mowgli Leicester on 0116 436 2413. Mowgli is open Sunday to Thursday, 11.30am-9.30pm, and Friday-Saturday 11.30am-10.30pm
