One of the things we hear at MaHa HQ quite often is: ‘We wish Harborough had a cinema.’ Well, that wish is soon to be granted. No, the Symington Building is not being bulldozed to make way for a multiplex (thank goodness), rather we can exclusively reveal the launch of Harborough Cinema.
The thing is, there actually is a cinema in Harborough already and there has been one for over 20 years. Now, that Cinema is getting a revamp – with the ability to show newer films and offer even more showings – all in the very centre of town. Harborough Cinema, which will be based at Harborough Theatre, will be one of the first venues in the country to install the latest development in Laser Projection Technology – meaning it can show films that are out on general release across the country. The benefits being a cosy, intimate venue serving alcohol, soft drinks, coffee and tea to take to your seat, as well as being conveniently placed in the heart of Harborough town centre. Rebranded from Octagon Films, the volunteer-led company are extremely excited about bringing current films, as well as a great selection of live theatre broadcasts, to Harborough. ‘There’s nothing quite like watching films on the big screen,’ says chair, Peter Mitchell. ‘We know this is something that people want and it has been a long-time coming. We can’t wait to show it to everyone.’ As a charitable community cinema, with the largest film membership society in the country, Harborough cinema also has a community outreach programme, showing films to local school children as part of the Into Film festival, the Leicester Comedy Festival and providing thousands of children to see films for free. More information, cinema listings and bookings will be found on the HarboroughCinema.uk website, with a full list of films on a monthly, rolling schedule from February. |
