As someone whose parents live in North Northamptonshire, I know the road heading south out of Harborough pretty well. The undulating countryside, quaint villages and home to not one, but two, stately homes.
Lamport Hall lies around 15 minutes from Market Harborough and, as well as boasting a beautiful house, gardens, tea room and events calendar, it can now also add a fabulous holiday cottage to its list. The Corner House will be familiar to anyone who knows Lamport. Sitting adjacent to the grand house itself and opposite The Swan pub, the Victorian building is eye catching thanks to its red and sand-coloured bricks. Amazingly, the house has stayed in the possession of the Lamport Estate since it was built and, in recent years, it has been let out to private renters. In October 2022, the last tenants moved out and Lamport took the opportunity to turn the beautiful house into a holiday cottage. ‘It has been very popular,’ says Amy, Executive Assistant to the Lamport Group who has overseen the redevelopment of the property. ‘Especially at Christmas. Before our guests arrived, we even managed to put up a tree in the living room.’ We visited at the end of May, during a bout of glorious weather, and although we did not get to experience the two cosy working fireplaces, we did witness a stunning sunset over the Northamptonshire countryside from the cottage’s ample garden. In fact, the views from the cottage gardens are worth the trip alone. The house consists of a kitchen, dining room, living room, three bedrooms, two bathrooms and a laundry room. ‘We have two generous double rooms and a single,’ explains Amy. ‘However, the sleeping arrangements can be flexible as we have a trundle bed that can be put in either of the double rooms for friends who don’t fancy sharing a bed!’ The redevelopment has been tastefully done to create cosiness and comfort, without losing any of the stunning original features. We particularly liked the original wood store and front entrance, now a home for swifts and swallows. The large rooms and comfy beds are a delight and give a real touch of luxury, while the dining space is perfect for gatherings. We were lucky enough to have been left a hamper from The Roaming Artisan containing oat milk, sourdough, preserves and cannolis. Such a treat, and available to order along with your visit. With one well behaved pooch also allowed, we were able to bring our family dog along, and he delighted in the many walks that can be taken around the countryside and even into the Lamport Hall grounds. We thoroughly enjoyed our ‘mini-break’ from Harborough and think it would make the perfect spot for family and friends who want to make the most of our fabulous countryside while still being close to Market Harborough.
